As we venture into Q2’23, April sees an 85% MoM decline in total funding, registering the lowest of any month in 2023 and 2022. A total of $2.6B was raised across 194 deals in Climate tech in Europe and North America.
April’s climate tech funding round-up
Despite a decline in total funding, the deal count remains solid indicating the momentum of the industry. North America and Europe both raised $1.3B each in climate tech investments. Following the trend, the US leads with $1.2B in investments, followed by the UK, France and Germany. It is interesting to note that the US experienced a sharper decline of 140% compared to Europe at a 30% MoM decline.
Like every month, the challenge area where most investments were allocated was Energy, attracting more than 50% of all investments, and raising a whopping $1.4B. Interestingly, the challenge area which received the most seed and pre-seed stage funding is not energy transport, indicating the focus on emerging innovation.
Despite the global downturn in startup funding, the United Kingdom has been consistently leading in climate tech investments. Unlike every month, the built environment sector observed significant deals in April, summing up to $480M leading it to have the highest average ticket size among other challenge areas.
