With more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic are already floating in our oceans, Katrin and her team are removing this plastic from water, forming an integral part in solving this problem.
Eutopia asked Katrin some questions to understand her, her company, and her product more.
How did your company get its name?
” We work with three concepts to remove inorganic (e.g. heavy metals), organic (e.g. pharmaceuticals, pesticides), and microplastic contaminants from waters. The goal is always to achieve zero pollutants in the water. This is where our name Wasser 3.0 comes from. Wasser is German for water. “
What’s your story?
” During my junior professorship in organic and ecological chemistry, I started my – some call it crazy – research on using hybrid silica gels for removing micropollutants and microplastics from waters.
After six years my junior professorship ended, but in my hands were some astonishing results and insights on how to tackle global water pollution, and in my head and heart I had and have a clear vision and mission: waters without microplastics and micropollutants, worldwide. “
Where did the idea come from?
” During my Ph.D. thesis I worked with polymers and hybrid silica gels, I started to ask myself: Could the latter be used to remove micropollutants and microplastics from water? Could this be a solution for a global environmental problem and a technological challenge in water treatment not yet solved?
My thoughts: Turn invisible, tiny particles into visible, big, floating ones. And make it as easy as possible, so that there are no more excuses for not doing it. “
